A recent special series on NPR focused on the risk of injury to nurses and their struggle against bureaucracies that hurt rather than help. Nurses suffer more than 35,000 back and other injuries every year, often from lifting patients who are too large to be lifted safely. In some cases, their employers refuse to take responsibility for this dangerous work. NPR listened to their stories, looked at the science, and explored a lifting innovation at VA Hospitals that is helping to keep nurses safe.
