NIOSH and the American Industrial Hygiene Association (AIHA) have developed a new initiative to address a crucial safety gap: training for young people. The Bureau of Labor Statistics shows that 1.5 million teenagers work in the United States, and 8 out of 10 high school students will work at some point during the year. Younger workers are twice as likely as adults to be injured on the job. That’s due, in part, to a lack of safety training. The new initiative, called “Safety Matters,” is a one-hour teaching module targeting students in grades 7 through 12. NIOSH and AIHA encourage educators to access the free training and build it into their lesson plans. Read more here.
