Grupo Financiero Banorte (Banorte) is the third largest financial group in Mexico. The group has a progressive outlook on sustainability: it is one of five Mexican companies to be named in the DJSI Emerging Markets index, and one of eight companies in Latin America to have achieved a high transparency score on the CDP’s 2014 Latin American Climate Disclosure Leadership Index. Having opted for UL’s proven web-based PURE Platform to collect, manage and analyze its sustainability data, Banorte asked UL to deliver comprehensive user training to key employees across the group.
Banorte’s lead sustainability analyst was keen to ensure that senior employees responsible for data management and reporting had an in-depth understanding of their new PURE Platform, which will help the company to measure 105 social and environmental indicators across all its operations in Mexico and the United States. Additionally, he wanted them to learn efficient, best practice approaches for data collection and analysis using the PURE Platform, in order to both enhance productivity and boost their confidence when using the system to handle sensitive sustainability data.
UL EHS Sustainability devised and delivered a comprehensive training session for the ten key employees, tailoring it to fit the participants’ wishes. The training was conducted across three partial days, in order to give participants the flexibility to continue working, and covered the three principal areas of configuration, data entry and data analysis. UL EHS Sustainability ensured that one of its native Spanish speaking implementation consultants led the training. The consultant who configured the Banorte system was also present to help and offer in-depth insights and advice.
The training was highly interactive, with the lead trainer first summarizing the purpose and capabilities of the system, as well as how it had been configured to meet Banorte’s needs, what type of data would be collected and how they could use it. Each participant worked through a series of exercises on specific aspects of the system, working in a ‘live demo’ version, with opportunities to ask questions throughout. The sessions ended with a review of the ground covered, further time for questions and clear signposts to the multiple ways that users can find support through UL: through the dedicated account managers, support team and extensive online help.
Participants of all levels – those responsible for data entry and those responsible for overseeing the system – met their objectives by developing a strong understanding of the system. 100% of participants felt that they had accomplished the degree of knowledge they wanted and could use the PURE Platform comfortably and efficiently.
Being able to harness the full potential of the system will be integral to Banorte’s success in delivering against its core sustainability objectives, stepping up its analysis of social and environmental hotspots and improving its reporting. Its current target is to achieve a 20% reduction of its Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions intensity compared to 2009 levels.
Banorte particularly appreciated UL’s ability to provide a native Spanish speaker who understood its business culture and could communicate with its employees in their own language. This set everyone at ease from the outset, and helped to ensure that they left with a more complete knowledge of the system.
